In a significant move toward sustainable Tree Crops transformation and economic growth, the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) has signed two strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on beekeeping innovation and land reclamation to strengthen Ghana’s tree crops sector.

The agreements, led by the Chief Executive Officer of TCDA, Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, were signed with Pan-African Business Developers (PABD) and Save Our Lands Projects LBG (SOL) as part of the Authority’s broader agenda to drive production enhancement, environmental sustainability, value addition, and inclusive development across the sector.

The partnerships are expected to create new income opportunities for farmers, restore degraded lands, boost rubber production, and support long-term sustainability within Ghana’s agricultural ecosystem.

The first MoU was signed between TCDA and Pan-African Business Developers (PABD) to implement the Bees for Income and Nutrition (BEEIN) Project, an innovative initiative designed to integrate beekeeping into tree crop farming systems.

The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of TCDA, Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, and the Chief Executive Officer of PABD, Mr. Kirk Agyekum.

The BEEIN Project is expected to support farmers by creating additional income opportunities through apiculture while also promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices. The initiative further aligns with TCDA’s strategic priorities of production enhancement, value chain development, and sustainability within Ghana’s tree crops sector. Industry experts believe the integration of beekeeping into tree crop farming systems will not only improve pollination and crop productivity but also contribute significantly to rural economic development and nutrition.

In a second major partnership, TCDA signed an MoU with Save Our Lands Projects LBG (SOL) to undertake a 10-hectare pilot land reclamation rubber plantation project. The agreement was signed by Dr. Andy Osei Okrah on behalf of TCDA and Mr. Aaron Agyapong, Executive Director of SOL.

The initiative seeks to restore degraded lands through sustainable rubber plantation development while simultaneously boosting rubber production and value addition within Ghana’s growing tree crops industry. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities, support local economic development, and empower farming communities through sustainable land use practices. According to TCDA, the project represents a strategic step toward balancing agricultural expansion with environmental restoration, while contributing to national economic growth.

The two MoUs reaffirm TCDA’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive economic transformation under the leadership of Dr. Andy Osei Okrah.

The Authority continues to pursue strategic collaborations that will strengthen Ghana’s six priority tree crops — cashew, shea, mango, rubber, oil palm and coconut — while positioning the sector as a major driver of economic growth, job creation, and export development. Speaking after the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of TCDA, Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, emphasized the importance of partnerships in transforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape.

“These strategic partnerships represent a bold step toward building a more sustainable, innovative, and economically resilient tree crops sector. Through initiatives such as the BEEIN Project and the land reclamation rubber plantation project, we are creating opportunities for farmers, restoring degraded lands, promoting environmental sustainability, and driving inclusive growth across the value chain.”
